Timbral Effects of Dynamic Range Compression

Pro Sound Web recently published an excerpt from Professor Corey's book Audio Production and Critical Listening: Technical Ear Training (Focal Press).

In addition to being a utilitarian device for managing the dynamic range of recording media, dynamics processing has become a tool for altering the color and timbre of recorded sound. When applied to a full mix, compression and limiting can help the elements of a mix coalesce. The compressed musical parts will have what is known in auditory perception as common fate because their amplitude changes share some similarity.

Guest speaker on architectural acoustics

Today Scott Pfeiffer from Threshold Acoustics in Chicago spoke to students in Performing Arts Technology about architectural acoustics and the design of music performance spaces.

Electronic Chamber Music + Radio

This semester, PAT 413 Electronic Chamber Music is focusing on Radio: Radio as technology, as medium, as institution, as instrument, as phenomenon. We are studying radiophonic music and radio art of the past, developing our own new works, and building radios. Follow our blog to track our progress:

Prof. Gurevich Delivers Keynote Address

In October, 2012, I traveled to Cali, Colombia to deliver the opening keynote at DiseƱo+, the 5th International Congress on Research in Design at the Universidad ICESI. I presented a history of the design of electronic musical instruments, and highlighted important contemporary challenges that designers face.

Since it's not everyday that I travel to Colombia, and John Cage's 100th birthday had just passed, I also performed a new realization of Cage's Rozart Mix for 4 cassette players, first realized by students in PAT 413 Electronic Chamber Music earlier in the year. My host Daniel Gomez led me on an intrepid mission through the junk markets of Cali to source old cassette players and some vintage Colombian tapes! I'm reliably informed that it was likely the Colombian premiere of Rozart Mix. We performed at the Auditorio Comfandi in conjunction with Videosonica.

Gypsy Pond XII on VIMEO!!!

Enjoy THIS.  The sound is generated by people walking on a sidewalk...with an Arduino/vidcamera sensor hookup "measuring human activity"!  The more people, the busier the music.  The 20 foot sculpture reaches to the sky...with it's many arms symbolizing "many paths, many truths" - but striving none the less.  The Kerosene flames below symbolize the human heart, ever fervent, ever searching.  Corny? Not really.  Hard to do? VERY! (imagine a floating 20-foot sculpture, and building a stable base that will keep it afloat in 50-mph wind - we did!!).  Yep.
